Industry Trends and The Rise of Temporary Recruitment

​If you have tuned into any media platform during 2020, you may have heard about a global pandemic that’s occurring. Due to said pandemic, we have unfortunately seen too many good organisations lose their best staff, and in turn, so many talented people have found themselves out of work. It’s been a difficult period for both businesses and individuals.

With so much uncertainty in the world, one trend we are seeing is a shift from permanent recruitment to temporary & contract work – and it’s a trend I think people should seriously consider.

There have also been new Australian reports released recently, showing which jobs are the most needed right now in our country. If you are looking for a career or industry change, this will be of interest to you. Don’t let current circumstances deter you from a career shakeup.

We all need to be a bit more creative now, and that goes for hiring companies too! If you are a hiring manager, have you ever over-looked a candidate because they don’t fit the traditional mould?

This is Just Temporary:

If you have found yourself out of work for a short period, temporary or contract work might be a nice solution for tying you over until you return back to your usual workplace. I don’t think there is such thing as a life-long career/workplace anymore, so why not use this time to experience the ins and outs of another company.

In the past, temporary workers have been viewed as your stereotypical “job hoppers”. However, this is far from the truth. Most people have commitments outside of work; whether that be family, children, sport, caring for someone unwell, schooling or community involvement – they can’t simply commit to permanent work. I really hope that by now, all employers have dismissed this outdated notion!

Opting for temporary or contract employment will give you the opportunity to work for different companies, gain new skills, or possibly even be a foot in the door to obtain a permanent position. Think of it as on-the-job training – you are building your experience, plus you are getting paid for it!

With the current climate being so unpredictable, there is a strong chance of seeing the job market being predominantly temporary or contract work until the future is clearer. Many employers may not want to commit to permanent staff quite yet, so temporary and contract work may come into vogue.

If you are thinking about swapping careers, here are some of the most needed roles in Australia at the moment according to a recent SEEK report:

  • Nursing

  • Aged Care and Disability Support

  • Warehousing, Storage and Distribution

  • Childcare

  • Road Transport

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an obvious need for more healthcare professionals across most industries. There is a notion that healthcare staff in hospitals and aged-care facilities are leaving the industry due to the growing pressure placed on them during the pandemic; but even pre-COVID, I feel there has always been a demand for more healthcare workers.

There has also been a massive increase in online shopping, which in turn means more delivery drivers are needed. So if you get excited watching Ice-Road Truckers, maybe a role in transport is for you!

Left of Centre:

I am a massive believer of transferable skills and thinking outside the box when it comes to candidates. Recruiters and hiring managers need to broaden their thought processes and identify potential candidates who may not fit a traditional skills profile. I truly believe that if a candidate has an obvious skill-set but doesn’t “tick all the boxes” of what your business may be looking for, you shouldn’t be afraid to explore these options.

Consider hidden talent pools who are traditionally overlooked. These can include parents or carers returning to work, or even returning service members. Don’t ignore or hold pre-conceived notions against non-traditional work groups; their life and working experiences can be a major benefit to you and your wider team.

From the candidate perspective, use this period to invest in a new skill set, or enrol in an educational short course. The new and diverse skills you gain during lockdown may help you get noticed quicker. With so much uncertainty in the world, we all need to become a bit more diverse – almost like a Jack (or Jill) of all trades if you will.

The Home Stretch:

Whether you agree with the decision or not, the Victorian Government’s “Road Map” gives us a timeline of when things should start looking somewhat normal again. In turn, this will hopefully mean an increase in recruitment and job activity.

We have all come this far, and it finally looks like there is some light at the end of the tunnel. Try to stay positive on both the professional and social fronts, we are almost there!
